A personal-domain comparison

Is Freemail Better Than iCloud Mail for Your Domain?

Freemail can be better if you want a separate domain inbox without an iCloud+ subscription and are comfortable with Resend setup and browser-local mail. If you already pay for iCloud+, its custom-domain email may be the better value because that feature is included in the subscription you already have.

Check what you already pay for

A new subscription and an existing subscription have different incremental costs. Do not count the entire iCloud+ bill as a mail-only expense if you already use its storage. Equally, Freemail’s $0 software plan does not include buying a domain or replacing your photo storage and device backups.

Choose Freemail when

A small, separate inbox fits

  • You prefer to keep this domain inbox separate from your Apple account.
  • You do not need the other iCloud+ services and accept Free’s storage limits.

Choose iCloud Mail when

Its workflow matters more

  • You already subscribe to iCloud+ and want to use its included domain-mail feature.
  • You want Apple Mail integration and an iCloud-hosted archive.

Before switching from iCloud Mail

Check whether your custom-domain address is also an Apple Account sign-in or is shared with family members. Changing MX delivery does not change Apple account identity or move family addresses. Keep the old archive and all needed identities available during the switch.

Changing MX records changes incoming delivery for the domain. Create the addresses you need and save old mail first. Replace the previous provider’s mail-routing records as instructed; do not mix unrelated MX sets. Test sending and receiving after DNS propagation, then decide when to close the old service. Existing mail does not move automatically. Read the routing and migration notes.

Questions about iCloud Mail and Freemail

Is iCloud custom-domain mail free for existing subscribers?

It is included with iCloud+, so using it may add no extra subscription charge if you already subscribe. It is not a standalone free feature of the basic iCloud plan.

Will moving my domain to Freemail change my Apple Account?

A DNS mail-delivery change does not migrate your Apple Account, photos or backups. Review any account sign-in address and other people using the domain before changing MX records.
